چکیده

A CFD validation workshop for synthetic jets and turbulent separation control CFD VAL was held in Williamsburg Virginia in March Three cases were inves tigated synthetic jet into quiescent air synthetic jet into a turbulent boundary layer cross ow and ow over a hump model with no ow control steady suction and oscilla tory control This paper is a summary of the CFD results from the workshop Although some detailed results are shown mostly a broad viewpoint is taken and the CFD state of the art for predicting these types of ows is evaluated from a general point of view Overall for synthetic jets CFD can only qualitatively predict the ow physics but there is some uncertainty regarding how to best model the unsteady boundary conditions from the experiment consistently As a result there is wide variation among CFD results For the hump ow CFD as a whole is capable of predicting many of the particulars of this ow provided that tunnel blockage is accounted for but the length of the separated region compared to experimental results is consistently overpredicted

Numerical and Experimental Analysis of Plasma Flow Control Over a Hump Model

Turbulent flow separation over a wall-mounted hump model and its control using plasma actuators were studied numerically and experimentally. The hump model chosen in this study was that used in a 2004 NASA Langley CFD validation workshop for turbulent separation control using synthetic jets. The numerical simulations solved the Reynoldsaveraged Navier-Stokes equations using Fluent. Different tu...

Heat Transfer under Double Turbulent Pulsating Jets Impinging on a Flat Surface

In this study, the numerical analysis of turbulent flow and heat transfer of double pulsating impinging jets on a flat surface has been investigated. The unsteady two-dimensional numerical solution for two similar and dissimilar jets was performed using the RNG k-ε model. The results showed that the RNG k-ε model has more satisfactory predictions of the Nusselt number distribution. Comparisons ...

Interaction of Synthetic Jets with Laminar and Turbulent Boundary Layers

The interaction between circular synthetic jets and flat-plate laminar/turbulent boundary layers is investigated using CFD simulations in this study. For turbulent boundary layer simulations, large eddy simulation (LES) is applied so as to obtain more accurate flow details. The simulation results are validated using both existing experimental data and numerical results obtained from other resea...

Numerical Simulation of Free Surface in the Case of Plane Turbulent Wall Jets in Shallow Tailwater

Wall-jet flow is an important flow field in hydraulic engineering, and its applications include flow from the bottom outlet of dams and sluice gates. In this paper, the plane turbulent wall jet in shallow tailwater is simulated by solving the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the standard  turbulence closure model. This study aims to explore the ability of a time splitting method ...

Active control of flow separation over an airfoil using synthetic jets

We perform large-eddy simulation of turbulent flow separation over an airfoil and evaluate the effectiveness of synthetic jets as a separation control technique. The flow configuration consists of flow over an NACA 0015 airfoil at Reynolds number of 896,000 based on the airfoil chord length and freestream velocity. A small slot across the entire span connected to a cavity inside the airfoil is ...
